This high grade telephoto zoom lens responds to the exacting requirements of professionals and advanced amateurs, yet at a reasonable price. One artificial crystal fluorite and two UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass lens elements in its optical system eliminate secondary spectrum, which is often the Achilles' heel of telephoto lenses resulting lower picture quality. These elements assure high resolution and high contrast throughout the entire zoom range. The latest optical design gives a minimum focusing distance of 1.2m and 0.21x maximum magnification. This lightweight, compact zoom lens, having the same level of optical performance as EF 70 - 200mm f/2.8L USM, assures good portability and operability. The ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) and inner focusing system achieves high-speed silent autofocusing. Manual focusing, even while in AF mode, is possible thanks to full-time manual focusing mechanism. Extenders EF 1.4X and 2X can be used with this lens, and the optional Ring Tripod Mount A (W) is being marketed concurrently.

About Me Semi-pro Photographer
For the money, this lens is hard to beat. I had rented the 2.8 version and ran it through the paces only to find that almost all of my shots were 5.6 to 11. No need for I.S. or faster glass. In low light I use a tropod anyway so it's a win win for me.

This lens produces __sharp__ images. It is definitely sharper than my former 24-105 F/4L and is comparable to my 50mm F/1.4 prime. Absence of IS isn't an issue for me since I mostly shoot outdoors in good light (SoCal). Amazing photos from my children's swim meets. While IS can reduce camera shake, it does nothing to freeze the action. To get sharp photos of my swimmers (and to freeze water drops around them) I shoot at 1/500. Even at 200mm the photos are ridiculously sharp.

Replaced one 70-200 for another
I replaced a very old (1992) 70-200mm "L" version with this new 70-200 "L". What's not to like?

Buy This Lens
By Fenix Wingz
This is by far my favorite lens in my arsenal. I'm normally a macro fanatic, so up until using the Canon 70-200L my macro lens was my favorite. The 70-200L is an amazing performer in terms of image quality and focusing speed and accuracy. Paired with my Canon 40D, this lens hits the mark nearly every time. This is the non-IS version of the lens, so it is not idea for indoor/low-light situations, although I have used the lens indoors with a flash and it works just as wonderfully. It's nice to have 4.0 aperture throughout the range; 2.8 would be great, but it hasn't been a limitation for me as I use this lens outdoors 99% of the time. The USM focusing ring is very smooth and very quiet, build quality is excellent. Some people find the lens a bit heavy, and I agree that it's not going to make the idea all-purpose/walk-around lens due to its weight. On the other hand, a more comfortable aftermarket neck strap might change your mind about that. This is my first "L" glass and I absolutely love it.
