Exquisite detail in highlight and shadowIn scenes with extreme contrasts, such as bright, sunlit clouds and a foreground deep in shadow, it was once quite difficult to render the textures of both equally. Not any more. D5100 combines two exposures to create an image revealing an extremely wide dynamic range, but with less noise and richer color gradation than ever before.

Comments about Nikon D5100 DX-format Digital SLR Body w/ 18-55mm VR Lens:
I took one photography class in college and became a serious enthusiast ever since. The manual makes it easy to use, if you take the time to read it and actually test the camera.

Great Fill-in for the D300
from Calgary, Alberta Canada
It's a bit too early for me to fully rate this camera but compared to my Nikon D80, it's way better so far. I'll add more comments after I've used it a bit more.

Same as D7000 minus the frills
from Buffalo, NY
The camera has the same image sensor as the more expensive D7000 and I was torn between getting the more expensive big brother or the cheaper D5100. I am glad that I spent the money on the D5100. Because it has the same image sensor, the images are really good. Spent the extra money on a prime lens and will see how well the stock lens works out (no major complaints so far).As a simple test, I have taken all of my pictures and tried to do an "Auto Contrast" and "I'm Feeling Lucky" auto adjustments in Picasa and found that Picasa cannot improve the pictures any more!! This tells me right away that the images are good to begin with in the camera. The camera is a bit small in your hands which may be a downside for some, but I am not complaining because it is much lighter than the D7000 or D90.Nikon reduced the price by getting rid of the built-in motor and the extra LCD/buttons on the camera and the metal body. But in the end, if you consider what the camera has (good image sensor, good metering, etc.), can you really justify the extra $800 for the kit ($400 for the body only)? I couldn't.

The Nikon D5100 equals excellence
from Upstate New York
This is an excellent camera. I haven't used the Effects or dialed in a specific AF yet but if the image quality and the accurate focus capabilities are any indication, everything else about this will be great as well. My previous Camera was a Canon DSLR and it couldn't hold a candle to this.
