NOTE: This is an "EF-S" Series Lens and is compatible only with Digital SLR's that accept EF-S lenses like the EOS Digital Rebel , Digital Rebel XT, Digital Rebel XTi, Rebel XSi, EOS 20D, EOS 30D, EOS40D and similar.

Equivalent to a 28-135mm lens, this EF-S lens brings true wide-angle to tele coverage to EOS 20D and Digital Rebel shooters. It has Canon's Image Stabilization system, allowing safe hand-holding at speeds up to three stops slower than otherwise possible. And of course, it's optically optimized for digital SLRs. A ring-type USM means both fast and silent AF, as well as full-time manual focus when in the AF mode.

Compact, lightweight design with a 5x zoom ratio -- 28 to 135mm equivalent
Excellent optical quality: Aspheric element with two Aspherical surfaces utilized
Close-focusing to 1.15 feet -- at 135mm, fills the frame with subject 3 x 4.4 inches
Ring-type Ultrasonic motor for superior AF performance; allows full-time MF
Image Stabilization extends the lens's usefulness in low-light levels
Circular aperture design -- natural highlights, even stopped down two stops
Non-rotating front element; lens length does not change during zooming
EF-S lens mount -- exclusively for EF-S compatible Digital SLR bodies.

The Canon Zoom Lens EF-S17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM offeris a 5x zoom ratio that enables broad shooting range from wide angle to telephoto.

While offering a wide focal range equivalent to 27-136 mm in the 35 mm format, the lens's optical design capitalizes on the merits of the reduced image circle to realize a compact, lightweight body that is 4.8 mm shorter and 65 g lighter that the comparable EF-series lens.

Moreover, the effective positioning of a double-sided glass-molded aspherical lens element ensures exceptional image quality throughout the zoom range.

The lens incorporates Canon's high-performance Image Stabilizer (IS), which compensates for approximately three shutter speeds to allow the handheld capture of shots that would otherwise be blurred by camera shake. Other performance-enhancing features include a fulltime manual focus override, and a 0.35 m minimum focusing distance throughout the entire zoom range for close-up magnifications. The EF-S17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM zoom lens features an environmentally conscious design that anticipates the EU's Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) Directive, which is due to take effect from July 2006. The RoHS Directive requires the elimination* of lead, mercury, cadmium hexavelent chromium, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBB).

4 out of 5 stars   Great Lens
By Mr. Flower shooter (New York City) June 25, 2013
Review submitted for Canon EF-S 17-85mm F/4-5.6 IS USM Lens, With Canon 1-Year USA Warranty (CN1785IS)
Pros: Focuses very close, Very close focusing, Fast / accurate auto-focus
Cons: Poor in Low Light
Other Comments: I just bought this lens and tried it over a 2 day period, shooting scenery and macro shots at the Botanic Garden. The greatest thing about this lens is you don't need to change lenses for different shots. I took wide angle shots, flower shots, macro shots of bees. Whatever situation you encounter you are prepared to deal with. It focuses closer than the specifications which is good for macro shots. I have a Canon 60 mm macro lens and the pictures come close to it. It focuses fast and quietly. For macro shots I prefer to focus manually, but I found it hard to focus manually because the focusing ring is too close to the camera body and sometimes I confused it with the zooming ring. Also since the lens is not fast, sometimes it is difficult to focus properly. Also the lens is not as compact as you see it in the picture. It is also a little heavy. Picture quality is great, but I noticed some color fringing on wide angle shots that did not have great depth of field (Color fringing on far away foliage). As to durability I still don't know, I will know when I use it constantly. In general this is a very good lens and so far I like it and feel comfortable with it.
I recommend this product Yes, I recommend this product
