A unique and indispensable addition to Canon's series of EF lenses, the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM offers an ultra-slim and lightweight design. Incredibly compact in size, the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM delivers high image quality from the center to the periphery thanks to its advanced lens configuration including an aspherical element, a bright 2.8 aperture, and optimized coatings that minimize ghosting and flare while providing exceptional color balance. The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM's unobtrusive design helps the photographer avoid overwhelming their subjects with a large lens and to remain discreet in sensitive shooting situations with no compromise in performance. Its diminutive design is complemented by features such as a newly developed stepping motor for smooth and quiet continuous AF while capturing video with the Canon EOS Rebel T4i DSLR, a circular aperture (7 blades) for beautiful soft-focus backgrounds, and a short minimum focusing distance of only 0.98 ft./0.30 m.

I shoot freelance and for a hobby and am blown away by this lens. For under $200 you get crisp results from a lightweight and unassuming lens. 5 stars.

Compact do everything lens!
from Loomis CA
I purchased this lens to go with the Canon Rebel SL1. This is the perfect combo for a small and light rig. It focuses silently and fast. The build quality is better than expected for this price range and the optical performance appears to be excellent!

I like lens quality, built, size. It makes no sound while auto-focusing. I am happy with the lens.

Excellent Value, Every Canon Owner Needs
from Anchorage, AK
This lens is a great value all around with good image quality and a high degree of usefulness at a decent price. The lens is small enough that it pretty much stays on my camera now when I am not in need of another lens and it fits on the camera inside of any of my camera bags, even the most compact. It is less than 1/2 the size of the 50mm 1.8 Mk II, with faster and quieter focus. It is a 2.8 though and not a 1.8; but that is great for a nice carry lens.
