MAIN FEATURES

World's first and greatest zoom ratio of 15X, covering 28-419mm 35mm-equivalent angle of view

Going back to the basic concept of "one lens covering everything from wide angle to telephoto," engineers at Tamron took up the difficult task of expanding the zoom range of Tamron's high power zoom lenses even further. Their unstinting efforts to extend the telephoto end beyond previous limits while retaining the wide-angle end at 18mm has borne fruit as an ultra high power zoom lens that is exclusively designed for DSLR cameras and boasts the greatest zoom range of 15X for the first time in the world.

Tamron's original VC mechanism for effective shake-free hand-held photography

Tamron's proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism was built in the AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di VC (Model A20) for the first time. It demonstrated its powerful compensation effect employing a tri-axial system that is designed to let three coils drive a compensator lens electromagnetically via three steel balls. Since the compensator lens is supported on rolling steel balls with very low friction, follow-up performance is also enhanced, resulting in stabilized viewfinder images. Since the mechanism is designed to allow parallel shifting of the compensator lens solely by means of electrical control, the mechanical construction is simpler and more compact, so the lens can be kept as small and light as possible.

Designing a high power, compact zoom lens with VC mechanism: Optical design optimization meets optimum power distribution

In developing the long-range zoom lens, Tamron's optical designers pursued the optimum distribution of power within the overall optical system based on the optical design know-how Tamron accumulated over 16 years since the introduction of the first compact AF28-200mm in 1992. The resulting optical system uses two LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements and three aspherical elements in order to effectively compensate for various aberrations including astigmatism, yet this design allows the first optical group to be small enough in diameter to realize the overall goal of a compact lens that incorporates a handheld-shake compensation mechanism.

Note: In order to realize the high zoom ratio of 15X, the optical system does not use any XR (extra dispersion glass) element. Instead, compactness is achieved through optimization of the power distribution within the whole optical system.

Minimum focusing distance of 19.3" over the entire zoom range for the max. mag. ratio of 1:3.5

The AF18-270mm Di II VC allows close focusing down to 0.49m (19.3 inches) from the subject over the entire zoom range even though it incorporates the VC mechanism. The maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.5* at its 270mm telephoto end is the top class capability among high power zoom lenses exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras.

*A format covered by an APS-C sized image sensor is smaller than that of 35mm format film. Therefore, this lens is capable of filling the frame by capturing an area that is almost the same as an area covered by a lens designed for the 35mm format and providing the maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.3.

Optical system optimized for digital SLR cameras by taking incident rays of light reaching the image sensor into consideration

In order to effectively compensate for changes in aberrations due to zooming, the zoom lens employs an innovative optical system that is designed to converge the angles of rays of light entering from the center to the periphery of the lens. The light rays thus reach the image sensor within a defined circle that assures high imaging performance and reduces light falloff.

High resolution performance

As a lens exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras, this zoom lens delivers high resolution and contrast performance for outstanding image quality with sufficient flatness of the field under an extremely wide range of photographic conditions.

Thorough countermeasures, including advanced internal surface coatings, prevent ghosting and flare

Tamron employs multi-layer coatings in order to reduce reflections on lens surfaces as well as internal surface coatings (coatings on the cemented surfaces of lens elements) in order to minimize reflections from the sensor itself within the mirror box, a problem inherent to all digital SLR cameras.

The world's first and greatest zoom power of 15X plus built-in VC mechanism achieved along with a remarkably slim maximum diameter of less than 80mm

Designing a lens with the world?s first and greatest zoom ratio of 15X inevitably entailed a larger travel distance of the components within the optical systems, but Tamron has successfully accommodated the optical system as well as the special VC mechanism in a remarkably compact and slim package by employing mechanical design technology accumulated over many years. The result: A slim design measuring less than 80mm in diameter despite the fact that it is an ultra high power zoom lens that incorporates a VC mechanism. Production engineering this unique zoom lens meant incorporating complex optical/mechanical components, and Tamron's engineers had to employ innovative manufacturing techniques including methods of further enhancing accuracy, reducing weight, and increasing the strength of many components.

Note: In order to achieve the world?s first and greatest zoom ratio of 15X, metal mounts are used in both Canon- and Nikon-mount lenses.

Zoom lock mechanism for convenience in carrying the outfit

The lens has a built-in zoom lock mechanism to prevent its barrel from sliding forward when the lens is being carried on the camera.

Flower-shaped lens hood as a standard accessory

The lens is supplied with a flower-shaped lens hood as a standard accessory. It is designed to efficiently cut harmful light entering at angles other than intended angles at all four corners of the frame. This ensures clear, flare-free images.

Outer design matches the newest generation high power zoom lens in the digital era

  • The lens employs a new outer design that is more refined and smoother in its overall contours by minimizing concavity, convexity, and variations in profile in order to match the latest digital SLR cameras.
  • A gold-colored metal ring is placed at a key portion of the lens as used in other Di II lenses. The "TAMRON" logo placed in the center portion of the lens enhances visibility of the brand while refining the overall design.
  • Delicate matte finish is added to the black painting over the lens barrel in order to enhance the high quality appearance of the lens.
  • The textured rubber pattern of the zoom and focus control rings has been improved again to a more pronounced, easy to grasp design than the conventional rubber pattern, for better feel and touch in manipulating the lens.

Pros: Not having too many problem using this lens...it is a tad bit slow but I just got it and am still learning. Pictures I've taken are sharp, clear, and colorful!
Cons: Bit slow in sizing up what it wants to do....and that could just be me since I'm still learning how to use it.

5 out of 5 stars   Excellent Photos

Review submitted for Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Aspherical Lens Pro Kit for Canon EOS (E2TM18270VCEOSPZD)

Pros: The photos taken are excellent quality and are equivalent to the more expensive Canon lens of 18-200. Additionally, the Tamron lens has a larger zoom than the Canon lens. I used this lens to take photos of a helicopter landing/taking off and it was able to capture the individual blades clearly while they were in motion.
Cons: The Tamron lens rotation to zoom is the opposite of the Canon so it is something that takes a while to get used to and can slow down the user which can be a problem when taking action shots.

5 out of 5 stars   Very Nice Versatile Lens

Pros: Smooth action. Accurate and versatile. Exactly what I was looking for... a good quality 'all purpose' lens to avoid having to carry multiple lens for everyday use. (That's why I bought my Nikon D5300 camera body only... to use with THIS lens.)
Cons: None that are obvious. Other reviews I have read suggest that the motor may be a bit slower than some but I cannot say that I noticed any slowness. Operated as I needed and expected.
Other Comments: Just used it on our vacation up the California coast. San Francisco. Monterey Bay Aquarium. Hearst Castle. etc. etc. etc. Lens did well in very low light (No Flash Permitted) situations in all locations once you learn how to set the auto exposure. A joy to use.

5 out of 5 stars   Very Nice Superzoom Lens
By Horsefan (Calhoun, KY) April 23, 2014
Review submitted for Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Aspherical Canon Lens 16 GB Bundle (E3TM18270EOSPZD)

Pros: Purchased for my sister to use on a Canon SL1 as a travel lens and when changing lenses would be inconvenient. It appears to be very well made. Immediately tested on the side of a house to check for distortion. There was slight distortion at 18mm and 270mm which was easily corrected in Lightroom with just a "-01" adjustment. There was no distortion at 25mm and 250mm.
Cons: No complaints after initial testing and used one day at a horse racing track.
Other Comments: This is going to be a fun outfit when used with the tiny Canon SL1 DSLR camera. Some people will criticize such a combination and admittedly, it is a fairly expensive paring. You get a great superzoom camera without the hated shutter lag. That is really nice for those individuals that shoot outside action events. I use a gripped 50D and four Canon "L" lenses for everyday photography. No interest in recording movies and not tested as such.
I recommend this product Yes, I recommend this product

Pros: Compact Design, Almost As Good As Canon's, Easy To Use, Good For Walkabout Camera
Cons: No Increase In Performance
Other Comments: This is a practical lens to walk around with if you don't want to miss any photo obs, provided you're willing to compromise picture quality when compared to the best Canon lenses. If you can keep the aperture at 8.0 when shooting landscape most of the time you'll probably get sharper results. Performing your own test shots is still a good idea. Turning off the VC while on tripod is a must.

5 out of 5 stars   Perfect all around zoom
By DaveD (Cincinnati) June 16, 2013
Review submitted for Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Aspherical f/ Canon DSLR With 6-Yr USA Warranty (TM18270VCEOSPZD)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Small For A Long Zoom, Lightweight
Cons: NONE
Other Comments: I purchased a new Canon SL-1 with no lens. I bought this Tamron 18-270 zoom as my primary lens for this camera. It was barely longer than the 18-55 zoom kit lens that came with this camera. For a little more dollars I got a lens that actually feels better and more balanced than the Canon kit lens. It great and you always great extra's with beach purchases like the Hoya UV filter free.

5 out of 5 stars   Great all in one lens
By STEVEAGMAN (NYC) May 24, 2013
Review submitted for Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD IF Lens w/Built in Motor for Nikon 6 yr Wrnty (TM18270VCNAPZD)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus
Cons: Heavy
Other Comments: Lens is a great "all in one lens". It covers a wide range from close up to distance so if you are going somewhere where you don't want to carry a variety of lenses this one lens suits. Only negative is that the lens is a little heavy but not nearly as heavy as carrying 2-3 other lenses to make up the range.

4 out of 5 stars   Generally amazing but watch 4 vignetting
By PD (Fairbanks, AK) March 25, 2013
Review submitted for Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Aspherical Lens Pro Kit for Canon EOS (E2TM18270VCEOSPZD)
Verified Purchaser
Pros:
Cons:
Other Comments: Great lens but there is some vignetting at full zoom under monochromatic conditions. Most lenses like that are probably going to have that problem though. There are also some concerns that the lower left portion of zoomed images are sometimes more blurry than the right but I think that may be the image stabilization or subtleties from shooting a certain way with slowish shutter speeds. That said the optical quality on most shots is simply phenomenal and the auto focus is amazing, and quiet.

Pros:
Cons: Lens Creep, Poor in Low Light, Blurry Focus
Other Comments: I am sorely disappointed in this lens. If I hadn't already mailed for the rebate, I would absolutely be returning it. It performs terribly in low light and any zoomed in photos are grainy and very poor quality. This is the most expensive lens I've ever purchased and it was a total waste of my money.

Pros: Great Zoom, Beautiful images
Cons: Noisy if using in video
Other Comments: I love this lens. It produces very high quality images from wide angle to ultra zoom. It focuses quickly and smoothly. Not as good with video mode on an DSLR, because as it is auto-focusing, it makes clicking noises, which do show up in the audio of the video. Also has more trouble focusing when in video mode. But for a great all around lens for travel, you can't beat this lens.

4 out of 5 stars   Tamron 18-270mm vs nikon 18-200mm
By Raymond (Austin, TX) July 28, 2012
Review submitted for Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD IF Lens w/Built in Motor for Nikon 6 yr Wrnty (TM18270VCNAPZD)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Consistent Output, Lightweight, Nice Bokeh
Cons: Lens Creep, Slow Focus
Other Comments: I used to be a all NIKON lens person. I crippled my nikon 18-200mm ED lens last year. The dealer asked for US$500 to fix it. No way! I tried Tamron before but I didn't like the yellowish cast always show up in the pictures. I am afraid this one is the same. I decided to take a chance. It turns out better than I expected. Pros (compare to nikon 18-200mm VR) . Light weight . Wider range . Price . Comparable picture quality (I am not a pixel peeper) Cons (compare to nikon 18-200mm VR) . Slower and less accurate auto focus . Not nikon I always 'felt' that my nikon didn't come out as sharp as it should be (with VR on). The Tamron one don't has this issue. Together with the bundle deal (lens + Hova filter, 16G sd card, tripod etc ...), with $100 rebate, can't ask for more than that. I haven't taken it out for a trip yet, can't tell too much about various lighting condition behavior. As a replacement for nikon 18-200mm VR for travel, I think it does the job right. Take off one star because of the auto-focus performance.

Pros:
Cons:
Other Comments: this lens is great for being very user friendly and has a wide range of use. I really enjoy not having to change lens for close to far off but the quality of the picture suffers. Its great for just out with the family but I can't use it for professional pictures. so i'm back to carrying around a big bag full of lenses. For the average user it's great and they would probably never notice the difference.

Review submitted for Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Aspherical f/ Canon DSLR With 6-Yr USA Warranty (TM18270VCEOSPZD)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Compact Design, Easy To Use, Improves Picture Quality
Cons:
Other Comments: this lens has the widest range of all lenses out there. It does so without sacrificing picture quality. It is at least as good as any other f5/6 lens out there. It can zoom in for a closeup and instantly zoom out for a panoramic view. If what you're looking for is versatility, this is the lens for you.

4 out of 5 stars   Excellent, but is it 419 mm or 270 mm?
By Phil (Sarasota, FL) February 13, 2012
Review submitted for Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II PZD Aspherical Sony DSLR With 6-Year USA Warranty (TM18270VCMAPZD)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Fast / accurate auto-focus
Cons:
Other Comments: The salesman Ray was very knowledgeable, and thoroughly understood my needs. However, the product description, and review in Popular Photography, confused me a bit: I had been expecting a film camera equivalent of 419 mm maximum, but that is ANGLE OF VIEW. It appears to be only 270 mm as stated in the Beach Camera headline. So I was a bit disappointed in that, but otherwise it is a fabulous lens.

Pros: Compact Design, Easy To Use
Cons:
Other Comments: Great all around lens. Good for protraits and landscape photos. Only notable downside at this point is lens creep and at focal lenghts other than fully zoomed in or out, and the narrow apture makes it slow in low lighting.

Pros: Improves Picture Quality, Compact Design, Easy To Use
Cons:
Other Comments: I'm a mom, aunt, daughter, wife, hiker and wildlife enthusiest. This purchase was so I don't have to change out lenses with my Canon EOS Rebel Xsi while hiking as well as taking pictures of my brand new nieces and nephews and so far so good! The zooming is backwards compared to my Canon lenses, but still great non-the-less. Picture quality is great! I'm sorry, I'm far from professional, so therefor I'm not going to use any technical terms or phrases here. I am learning though! Overall, great lens.

Pros: Durable, Rugged, Nice Bokeh, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Lightweight, Consistent Output, Strong Construction
Cons: Poor in Low Light
Other Comments: Love this Lens. It is great for hiking and general purpose photography. Mine seems well built and with Tamrons 6year warranty I am happy. Very light and incredible range. Using on a A77 I only had a month or so but I have taken some great shots with it. Some distortion which can be corrected in L/R wide end but very usable. I also own Sony 16-50 2.8 and 35 1.8 but this one gets the most use for enjoyment photography. It focuses pretty fast too. If you are thinking about this do it all lens go for it especially with the rebate definitely worth it.

5 out of 5 stars   This is a darn good lens

Review submitted for Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Aspherical f/ Canon DSLR With 6-Yr USA Warranty (TM18270VCEOSPZD)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Small and lightweight, All in one convenience, Easy To Use, Compact Design, Takes great family photos
Cons:
Other Comments: If you want to spend more time enjoying the moment rather that fooling with changing lenses than this is the lens for you. You get good quality photos at wide angle 18mm as well as at 270mm. I'm no expert photographer, so this review will not say blurring at the periphery or garbage like that. Simply put, this lens will get you the shot you need when you want it. If you are an expert, you should be going for the L series Canon lenses anyway. This is a great value lens that I have been very happy with. Warranty is also great and Tamron has been very responsive in answering questions and getting the Warranty on file. If you are in the market to have a lens like this, than you will not be sorry buying it.

Pros: Great price, Compact Design, Easy To Use, Improves Picture Quality
Cons: Slips when not horizontal
Other Comments: Slight slippage when camera is point up or down and causes picture to be out of focus. When I use the lens for birding I will see the extent of the problem.

4 out of 5 stars   Good to have it during travel.
By HP2407 (Washington, DC) January 04, 2012
Review submitted for Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Aspherical f/ Canon DSLR With 6-Yr USA Warranty (TM18270VCEOSPZD)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Easy To Use, Compact Design
Cons: Poor Clarity, IQ compromised
Other Comments: 18-270mm is pretty decent zoom lens; and because of this the IQ is slightly compromised at 200+ mm end. It takes sharp pictures in sunlight; however, not a great lens for indoor shooting or low light at night. I tried to take some pix at night at 270mm without tripod and it was shaking a bit. I tried with few shots and could not take a better picture without tripod; though, the VC feature is awesome and it works. This lens has clear AF. It's light weight, and I would recommend this lens for day-to-day outdoor shooting / travel and it's much easier to carry rather than caring 2-3 different lenses.
