Lens hoods protect against uncontrolled, stray light and unwanted reflections which result in reduced contrast and ghost Images. In general, the use of a lens hood is recommended because better contrast improves the appearance of the photograph. The lens hood will also shield the front lens element against rain and mechanical damage.

good product if used correctly
from New York
Don't use with a wide angle lens, say 15 to 30mm, vignetting occurs, Otherwise a great product at a good price.
Fine for Long Focal Lengths
from Washington DC
This is a cheap fix. Does fine at longer focal lengths; no complaints there. Vignettes at shorter focal lengths due to the thread count and thickness of the lock ring. Would not recommend for wide angle shots.
