How to Capture Breathtaking Autumn Footage with Your DJI Drone

It’s that time! The forests have erupted in shades of red, orange and gold this fall. It’s time to strap on those cameras and hit the trails to capture the colorful fall foliage! But wait! As beautiful as it is to see from the forest floor, it's even more impressive from above. So don’t just grab any camera, grab your aerial drone for even more dramatic shots this autumn. We have some tips to help you get the most of your drone shots this fall.
Stability
As with many different types of landscape photography, stability can play a major role in the overall quality of your images. When you’re using a drone, even the tiniest bit of wind can affect the overall sharpness of an image. Especially if you’re shooting at slower shutter speeds. A good tip is to use “Tripod” mode on your Mavic Pro Quadcopter Drone from Beachcamera.com. Tripod mode effectively improves the stability by applying more torque and power in specific directions, allowing the drone to become more stable. Tripod mode will impact the speed of the drone movements in any direction, and can be effective when flying extremely close to the trees or when there is a low level of wind. The Mavic series of drones also has a “gimbal lock when shooting” function which can help prevent any shaking while taking images of the foliage. Turning this on helps improve the stability of your flying camera.
Shoot bracketed exposures
Like the Mavic Pro, the Mavic 2 Zoom from Beachcamera.com will allow you to shoot bracketed images. This provides the options of blending images in post processing for dynamic range, or selecting the best of the exposures for use later. This is a common technique with landscape photography. It can help ensure you’re capturing the full range of luminosity values. From the darkest of shadows all the way to the brightest of highlights, you’ll still maintain detail throughout that range of the fall foliage. Shooting bracketed exposures is an effective way of maximizing your overall image quality.

Use neutral density filters
As with normal cameras, drone cameras and image quality can benefit from the use of neutral density filters, polarizers and even potentially UV to control the shutter speed. Both for still images and also for video. Polarizers will help cut through the glare on water if used correctly. They can also help increase overall saturation of things like skies and foliage. Neutral density filters are very useful for video to control the shutter speed. 1/50 secs shutter speed is great for the cinematic feel to videos. In the right weather conditions neutral density filters can be used for longer exposures of up to 8 seconds for still images on your Mavic Air drone as well. Using neutral density filters can help you control the shutter speed. This can assist you in being a bit more creative with your images.

Your DJI drone will allow you to capture spectacular autumn foliage as you’ve never seen it before!
