Our favorite photography items for beginners

Are you thinking of beginning a hobby or career in photography? For all you burgeoning beginner photographers your ones in your family, there are important photography equipment that you should have. Everything starts with having a good camera able to reproduce and capture great quality images. The types of cameras could be point and shoot cameras or a entry level to mid level DSLR cameras. Some of the best cameras able to bring out the best photography on the market today are what are referred to as APS-C cropped and wide angle full frame mirrorless cameras.

Many of these offer what is called an interchangeable lens camera, which means that your camera can handle multiple types of lenses and often times from other manufacturers than the one of your camera. This is fantastic versatility. There are also times where the camera is offered as a camera body only which means that no lens accompanies the actual new digital camera and you would have to purchase a lens separately. Please bear in mind that when attempting to mount a lens from a manufacturer other than your camera’s mounting system, you will need to purchase a mounting adapter. For example, you can purchase cameras from great camera brands such as Canon like Canon EOS series, Nikon, Sony and more.

When a lens accompanies a new camera they are typically a prime lens, which means it is a versatile lens that can accomplish the majority of your day to day tasks. You can also attach a telephoto lens or purchase a camera with one and the same applies to a zoom lens. It is all a matter of the type of photography you are shooting for. Either way, you will want a camera and camera lens which will provide the highest image quality as a essential piece of equipment in your stable of photography gear. In addition, cameras can have a built in flash or an external flash can be added if more ambient light is needed for your photoshoot.

There are a plethora of other essential items to a photography business that beginners would also love to add to their camera gear. These can range from reflectors such as UV filters, polarizing filters or ND filters. Some of these items would be found in a kit lens bundle. A cleaning kit is also an important item for photographers, as keeping your photography equipment dust free and clean will ensure their longevity. Don’t forget items like memory cards and extra batteries as these go a long way to ensuring that you have the proper amount of storage space and usage time for your camera.

We have a couple of suggestions for some great new DSLR cameras that are just beckoning for all your beginners out there.

Let’s first take a look at the Sony a7C Full Frame Mirrorless Alpha Camera Body + 28-60mm Lens Kit. This is a an exceptional DSLR camera for beginners at a great starting price point with the included prime lens.

Some of the features we love about this camera are:

  • Fantastic price point for a DSLR camera with such features.

  • This is the World’s smallest and lightest full-frame camera.

  • With a tremendous 24.2 MP back illuminated sensor for gorgeous images.

  • The Sony a7C has the capabaility to shoot in 4K HDR at 30 FPS and Full HD or 1080P at 120 FPS for great frame rate refresh. This should help with blurriness of your image and all but remove any when showing your image prior to or after post processing.

  • All new 4D focus covering approximately 425 AF points of your shot. Tremendously improved human and animal eye tracking with the camera in autofocus mode.

  • A side opening vari-angle (tilting and rotating) LCD screen which has the brightness even for those harsh lighting conditions like sunny snowy reflective days or even low light days.

  • With both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi included with the camera, connecting it to the Sony app found in the appstore of your PC or smartphone, photo editing and post processing have never been easier. Just connect the camera to the app and you can even use Adobe Lightroom so that high quality image will shine through.

  • Powered through connecting via USB-C is the the high-capacity NP-FZ100 battery. This battery provides enough power to capture up to 740 images without needing a charge. However as this is a lithium ion battery which will degrade in capacity over time, it is always recommended to have spare batteries. These can also be especially useful for extended Vlogging sessions.

Another of the fantastic DSLR cameras we recommend is the Nikon D850 45.7MP Full-Frame FX-Format Digital SLR Camera - Black (Body Only). As this is a body only camera it means that it is an interchangeable lens camera so you can choose from over 70 of Nikon’s patented NiKKor lenses to ones from other manufacturers. Some other great features of this camera are:

  • The Nikon designed and built back-side illuminated (BSI) full-frame image sensor with no optical low-pass filter.

  • 45.7 megapixels of jaw dropping resolution, outstanding high dynamic range for those high quality images and video recordings.

  • Up to 9 fps continuous shooting at full resolution full AF or autofocus performance activated.

  • 8K and 4K time-lapse movies with new levels of sharpness and detail. So this camera can future proof you as technology moves more and more towards 8K availability.

  • Tilting touchscreen, Focus Shift shooting mode, outstanding battery performance and much more. You get the conveniences of multiple shooting modes with the battery life to last for those long photography sessions.

  • 4K Ultra HD video recording at 30 FPS, slow motion up to 120 FPS at 1080p or Full HD.

  • Per Nikon, the D850 has the lowest base ISO (ISO 64) of any DSLR or mirrorless camera.

  • Wi-Fi and bluetooth included to access your photoshop software.

Camera Gear

As we previously mentioned there are many items that would appeal to beginners outside of just a new camera.

One of the initial items we like to discuss, because we know how much it has helped us in our photography is having the right camera bag. A great camera bag can make a world of difference to a photographer, so they know that their photography equipment is securely and safely stored for traveling and on the go photography.

We recommend the Deco Photo Photo and Video Backpack for Mirrorless and DSLR Cameras and Drones. There are several things to love about this camera bag. Let’s explore them:

  • With it’s ultra compact design with large enough capacity to hold and protect up to 1 SLR/DSLR camera, 2-3 lenses, tripod and additional small accessories or 13" laptop. This camera bag has all the versatility you need as it can even transform from an outdoor to an indoor camera bag by removing the inner shell allowing for larger items to be stored such as a 15” laptop.

  • Easy slide out compartments for your camera and all of your camera equipment.

  • Made with high density, water-resistant “dacron” nylon material including a rain cover, gives you the peace of mind that your photography equipment can handle even inclement weather conditions.

Memory cards are also a great addition to any beginners photography equipment collection. Memory Cards

Having a top notch SD card is also extremely important to photographers. There are many great SD cards from Lexar to choose from. Please keep in mind to look at the size rating of the memory card prior to purchase in order to ensure compatibility with your camera. Good SD cards are typically rated for 64 GB of storage and up for, making for a nice amount of storage for your images. You can even purchase a 1TB SD card for a tremendous amount of storage. There are SD cards or flash drives from manufacturers like SanDisk such as the SanDisk Extreme or extreme pro as well, which offer alternatives.

With the need for storage as the size of stills and videos increase with the ability to record in 4K HDR. Some cameras are even able to record in 8K, so having a second or spare SD card is something you should consider. From the lowest end of the range of storage options on SD cards to the best, we advise to purchase one with at least 512 GB of storage and possibly even more storage pace. SD cards can be rated for UHS-I or UHS-II and SDXC, increasing the read/write capabilities, so your images can transfer to say a social media site or your hard drive on your PC in a fast and efficient manner.

One Last item that we believe would also be beneficial for photography beginners is the Vivitar Professional 59" Tripod. Having a tripod is so wonderful as you can kiss the normal shake associated with handheld photography goodbye. The Targus Digital Tripod fully extends to 66 inches. It can fold down to only 17 inches when not in use. Many professional photographers will tell you this is a great way to eliminate the camera shake we previously discussed. Tri-Pods also lend a certain level of professionalism to a photoshoot and beginners should take advantage of this as they learn to perfect their handheld shooting.

In closing we we believe that these recommended cameras and photography equipment are very important for new beginners in the world of photography. So purchasing some of all of these items will have your new photography career or hobby up and running and you can quickly progress from a beginner to a more advanced photographer.
