DJI Avata – Born to Fly

DJI Avata

DJI’s newest drone, the Avata is one of the most innovative new drones to hit the market.  DJI is a world leader in civilian drone and creative camera technology and has brought us some of the most popular and loved drones available such as the Mavic, Air, and Mini drone series.  Since its release date we have been swooning over the DJI Avata drone’s FPV (First Person View) immersive experience, its blistering speeds and maneuverability, and the vividly crystal-clear photography and videography that it produces.

Taking the evolution of drone flight control to the next level, the DJI Avata FPV drone is a first of its kind using DJI Goggles 2 and DJI Motion Controller technology.  This allows for unmatched performance, agility, and easier control.  The first-person view puts you in the drone creating a flying experience like no other.  The Avata also boasts enhanced and layered safety features which enables you to push your piloting skills and challenge yourself to perform creative aerial maneuvers and flight paths without the worry of crashing into obstacles or fly through difficult flight patterns.

Between the FPV, safety, and optical features, the DJI Avata is great for beginners and professionals alike, providing a fun one of a kind flying experience while also capturing amazing images and footage for whatever content you may be creating.

Design

The Avata is designed for FPV and speed.  With the help of a stripped-down chassis, the Avata weighs a mere 410 grams and can get a top speed of about 60 MPH which is insane.  The aerodynamic design has the chassis on top with propeller mounted underneath protected by propellor guards.  This is a nice redesign that adds a layer of protection from rough flying and can even flip itself back over if you somehow manage to land the drone on its back using a new Turtle mode.  This can easily happen when flying the Avata because the maneuverability of this drone is extremely agile thanks to its aerodynamic design and weight.

First Person View (FPV)

Created and designed to be used with the DJI Goggles and DJI Motion Controller, the Avata puts you in the cockpit of the drone.  Flying is as easy as point and go with the motion controller that lets you steer your drone along with the movement of your hand.  With all of the essential tools and features at your fingertips, you can hover, hyper accelerate, weave, or take hard stops within a fraction of a second.

DJI Goggles 2

DJI’s next generation video headset is smaller, weighs less, and is more comfortable than its predecessors.  Additionally, the Goggles 2 viewfinder is far more advanced than other DJI drones offering a much brighter crystal-clear first-person view image.  Boasting a top-of-the-line Micro OLED screen and adjustable diopters, you will get the perfect fit and view whether you wear glasses or not.

When Using the Goggles 2 together with the DJI Motion Controller you have full control of the drone and the gimbal camera allowing you to adjust to your environment and accomplish your vision.  There is a touch panel on the side of the goggles for easy access to the Avata’s settings allowing you to tweak using only one hand leaving the other hand to maintain control of the drone using the motion controller.

DJI Avata and DJI Goggles 2 connect using DJI O3+ transmission, which DJI prides as the most powerful and reliable technology for precise control, and ultra-low latency.  It offers the lowest transmission delay of approximately 30 milliseconds, the longest transmission distance of 10 kilometers, auto-switching dual frequencies, a high bitrate of 50 Mbps, and innovative anti-interference methods to ensure a smooth uninterrupted feed.

You can also view the live feed from your mobile phone or computer using DJI Goggles 2 Wireless Streaming function.

DJI Motion Controller

DJI designed the Motion Controller, so the flight and complex movements works with precision and execution based on your natural hand motions.  The motion controller gives you full control over the drone putting you in the pilots seat to tackle any maneuver or stunt even if you’re a first time flyer.

Specs & Stabilization
Besides the enhanced FPV goggles, controller, and features, the Avata also takes a major leap ahead of other FPV drone racers when it comes to optical components.  With a 1/1.7-inch 48-megapixel photo CMOS sensor, f2/8 aperture, ultra-wide-angle lens, and viewing angles up to 155 degrees, you will create top notch photography and videography.  The wider field of view welcomes the viewer into the picture replicating how it would appear using natural eyesight for an impactful and immersive visual experience.

Record images and video up to 4k/60fps and slow-motion video at 2.7k/100fps.  The Avata supports DJI’s famous D-Cinelike color mode which offers more editing possibilities in color detail and advanced color grading during postproduction editing.

Thanks to what DJI calls Super Stabilization, the Avata provides smooth shooting using two of DJI’s flagship stabilization technologies.  DJI RockSteady gets rid of the overall picture shake while DJI HorizonSteady maintains the picture oriented toward true level.  This layered stabilization ensures that you are always getting steady shots and Ultra-HD video regardless of the aircrafts speed and volatile aerial maneuvers you may be attempting.

Flight Safety Features
Built for producing professional content and material yet designed to be operated for beginners and professionals alike.  The Avata provides exceptional safety features enabling beginner drone pilots to confidently take flight and go without concern for possibly crashing and causing damage to the drone.

The Avata has built in propellor guards which increases the durability of the fuselage and limits potential risk of damage.  The dedicated emergency brake and hover feature lets you stop or hover at moment’s notice and is operable while using any flight mode.  There is also a Failsafe Return to Home feature which will send the aircraft back to its home point.  This will happen automatically with a push of a button, when the drone loses transmission, or when the battery reaches a critical level.

DJI Avata uses DJI’s GEO 2.0 geofencing system which informs you of any airspace restrictions and potential hazards, and to automatically prevent the drone from flying near certain high-risk locations, such as airports. DJI Avata also features DJI’s AirSense ADS-B receiver system to warn you when airplanes or helicopters are nearby, and broadcasts DJI’s AeroScope signal to help authorities monitor airborne drones in sensitive locations. The overwhelming majority of drone pilots fly safely and responsibly, and DJI Avata’s top speed performance can warrant extra attention and care from drone pilots to be aware of their surroundings.

Flight Modes
Just like the design, the flight modes are also geared towards every type of flyer whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned drone pilot.  With 3 different modes, the Avata provides control options for both ends of the skill spectrum and one hybrid mode for graduating your talents to the next level.  Normal mode will let you fly the drone as you would any normal drone.  Manual mode gives you full control over everything, allows for customizable parameters, and is meant to only be used with the DJI FPV remote controller 2.  Finally, the new hybrid Sport Mode brings you somewhere in between normal and manual modes giving you some of the manual mode functions while maintaining the safety features of normal mode.  Sport mode is excellent for beginners looking to expand their comfort zone and improve their flying skills.

DJI Virtual Flight App
With DJI’s free flight simulator app, you can practice new flying maneuvers in various risk-free environments.  You can also use the app for Avata tutorials on flying and operations.
