How to Choose Your Next Camera

Have you taken up at least one new hobby in the past year? If you have been dipping your toe in the wonderful world of photography, you have most likely started your journey with a compact camera. Are you comfortable enough now with your photography skills to move up from your current camera? If you’re shooting with a compact camera with a fixed lens, you are pretty much stuck in your tracks. It’s time to replace your beginner camera with a newer one that offers more. Your photography skills have progressed and you need a camera with more functionality or one that delivers better image quality. With so many camera types to choose from, we have some tips to help you choose your next camera.

DSLR
Unlike the fixed lens compact camera that probably got you started on your photography venture, DSLR cameras have the widest range of lenses available. This means you can choose a lens that’s been developed specifically to suit your needs. DSLRs currently have the widest range of accessories. Plus, one DSLR battery can last you all day while taking over 1000 shots. You can’t do that with a single battery on a compact or mirrorless camera. If you are wanting to experiment with video recording, a DSLR camera is a great choice as your next camera. You can add an external microphone for stereo sound recording to use with the HD video feature available on DSLR cameras. A DSLR will make a great step up if you’re needing top quality images, shoot action photography, or are wanting to take your hobby more seriously. When you’re ready to move up from your compact camera to a DSLR, just remember a DSLR isn’t going to fit in your pocket!

Mirrorless
Mirrorless cameras have become increasingly popular over the past few years.  Mirrorless cameras are great for the casual hobbyist to the advanced amateur photographer. Just like DSLRs, mirrorless cameras have interchangeable lenses. There are even a few models available with full frame sensors like the Sony Alpha a6100 APS-C Mirrorless Interchangeable-Lens Camera from Beachcamera.com. One of the biggest advantages to using a mirrorless camera over a DSLR is the lighter weight and smaller size. Mirrorless cameras are easier to manipulate when you are photographing on the go, but still expect high quality results. One of the reasons mirrorless cameras are lighter is because they use an EVF, electronic view finder, instead of the large LCD found on DSLRs. The EVF is not only similar to using live view, it offers a huge advantage when you’re struggling with depth of field. Adjust your aperture while looking through the EVF. The EVF is a convenient way to make your settings for any given shot.
